Community : Community Involvement Enriches Education

Community Involvement Enriches Education

College Tech Prep actively involves business, community agencies, churches and others in assisting students with the process of shaping their life careers. Programs bridge the gap between school and work, engaging the community in the career education and student enrichment.

Collaboration helps students develop relevant skills for the workplace through revised up-to-date curriculum, youth apprenticeships, mentoring experiences and service learning projects that link students and community organizations.

Examples of consortia community involvement

  • The Akron Area Tech Prep Consortium collaborated with The Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce in the use of the Business Education Network (BEN). BEN has established more than 265 partnerships with local business, industry and labor and is providing over 1,125 career exploration opportunities including job shadowing experiences, internships and teacher externships.

  • The Lakeland Area Tech Prep Consortium has received a National Tech Prep Network Caterpillar, Inc. Exemplary Worksite Learning Award. This award was based upon a partnership between Mentor High School and the Progressive Insurance Company.

  • Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium IT mentoring program, in collaboration with the Greater Dayton IT Alliance, has grown to involve more businesses serving more students.

  • The North Coast Tech Prep Consortium is supported by the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. GCGA participates on the Governing Board, assists in finding companies interested in hiring College Tech Prep students, participates in marketing development and has co-sponsored the Scholarship Awards and Recognition Ceremony. The GCGA represents over 1,000 businesses in the greater Cleveland area.
